Tax on Boats

The State of Missouri has enacted a law that will require proof of paid personal property tax on all USCG Documented Vessels located in the State.

Excerpt from Missouri Senate Bill 778, enacted into law effective August 23, 2006

306.030 Revised Statutes of Missouri;

When applying for or renewing a certificate of registration for a vessel documented with the United States Coast Guard under section  306.016, owners of vessels shall submit a paid personal property tax  receipt for the tax year which immediately precedes the year in which  the application is made or the renewal is due and which reflects that  the vessel is listed as personal property and that all personal property  taxes, including delinquent taxes from prior years, have been paid, or a statement certified by the county or township in which the owner's  property was assessed showing that the state and county tangible personal property taxes for such previous tax year and all delinquent  taxes due have been paid by the applicant or that no such taxes were due.

This means that every owner of a documented vessel who has not paid personal property tax on their vessel is considered delinquent in declaring ownership as of January 1, 2006, and delinquent in payment of tax as of December 31, 2006.  This payment will be required to renew this year (2007), or any future years.

Overland Park Boat Show

Sure makes you "Think Spring" when you climb up on a new cruiser or runabout at a boat show and that's exactly how many felt as they cruised the convention center at the Overland Park Boat Show sponsored by the Lake Ozark Marine Dealers Association last weekend.

Dealers from Lake of the Ozarks displayed everything from jetskis to bass boats, sport boats, and luxury cruisers.  What's the latest and greatest?  Certainly hard tops on the big boats with more amenities than ever.  And there was some buzz about Volvo's IPS, Independent Propulsion System.  It's "reverse" mounted propellers definitely look strange, but the video of the amazing manuervabilty with the joystick control was unbelievable.

Open bow runabouts generated a lot of traffic with many customers looking to buy just a bit bigger boat (3 ft-itis?) and get yet more bells and whistle options.

Docks and lifts were also generating interest....perhaps in anticipation of a bigger boat, but also some still looking to repair docks from damage caused by the winter storm.  Dave Hotz at Dock Realty (www.dockrealty.com) was very busy.  We also talked to several marina owners who reported "fairly full" regarding availablity of slips...particularly the larger slips for the larger boats.

All this talk about boats....you can't help but think about getting out on the water again.
